Summary: Although y/y changes in monthly retail sales have been volatile post-covid, they have yet to turn negative through May 2022. However, the post-covid retail spending cushion provided by a spike in covid savings levels is wearing thin as evident by a simultaneous decline in both retail spending and savings rates. Hyperinflation and rising interest rates are making it increasingly difficult for consumers to keep their heads above water.
